Periodontosis

Many people know the term, but only a few know what really lies behind periodontal disease. In the following article, you will learn everything important about the development, symptoms and prophylaxis of periodontal disease.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease, also known as periodontitis in medical parlance, is an inflammatory disease that mainly affects the gums and gum bed. In the worst case, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss. Periodontal diseases are often characterised by chronic symptoms.

How does periodontal disease develop?

Periodontal disease is primarily caused by bacteria in the oral cavity that are ingested daily through food and are deposited on the teeth in the form of plaque (bacterial plaque). The precursor of periodontal disease is the common inflammation of the gums (gingivitis), which can then spread to the jawbone (tooth bed).

Risk factors for periodontal disease

• Smoking
• Inadequate oral hygiene
• Diabetes mellitus
• Genetic predisposition

What is the course of periodontal disease?

After the inflammation has spread to the tooth bed, the gums begin to recede and detach from the tooth. The resulting pockets in the tooth provide an even better opportunity for bacteria to multiply, thus causing the inflammation to intensify. The bacteria can also make their way from there towards the root of the tooth and sometimes even to the jawbone. If the inflammation spreads to the supporting structures of the tooth, this can ultimately lead to the loss of the affected tooth.

How can periodontal disease be prevented?

An important role in periodontal disease prophylaxis is attributed to thorough tooth cleaning, as it is much more difficult to combat risk factors other than insufficient oral hygiene. With a sonic toothbrush, such as the happybrush, you are well equipped to prevent periodontal disease without any extra effort!
